Round 2 Performance Audition Preparation

You made it through Round 1 - congratulations! Now prepare a stellar performance audition for schools like Dame Alice Owen's that use a 2-round music assessment.

First: Ace Round 1

You can't get to Round 2 without excelling in Round 1 (the listening test). Make sure you're practicing all listening skills first.

What to Expect in Round 2

Round 2 is a short individual performance audition (typically 5-7 minutes) where you perform 1-2 prepared pieces on your chosen instrument or voice.

Piece Selection Tips

Choose Pieces You Know Well

Pick pieces you've been working on for at least 3-6 months. Confidence matters.

Show Technical Ability

Include passages that demonstrate your technical skills (scales, arpeggios, articulation).

Demonstrate Musicality

Choose at least one piece with expressive, lyrical sections to show musical sensitivity.

Consider Contrast

If performing 2 pieces, pick contrasting styles (e.g., Baroque + Romantic, fast + slow).

Stay Within Time Limit

Better to perform 1 piece beautifully than rush through 2. Quality over quantity.

Audition Day Tips

Arrive 10-15 minutes early to settle nerves

Warm up beforehand (but not too much - save energy)

Dress smartly but comfortably

Make eye contact and smile at the panel

If you make a mistake, keep going - don't stop or apologize

Bring a clear copy of your music for the panel (if required)

Take a deep breath before starting each piece

While Round 2 performance is important, you must first excel in Round 1 (the listening test) to get invited to the audition.
